How does a GCM work? The glucose sensor is the size of a bristle in itude. Fresh. It is placed in the tissue under your skin with a needle, and the needle is then removed. Move the sensor to a new location every 6 to 7 days. The sensor is connected to a wireless transmitter that is taped to your skin. The sensor measures the glucose in your body's tissues every five minutes. The information is sent to a receiver, insulin pump or smartphone. It will send you an alert if your glucose gets too high or too low. Even if you have a GCM, check your blood glucose with a finger stick at least four times a day, usually at meals and at bedtime. The numbers on your GCM and meter may not match. Always does your insulin from your finger stick, not your GCM. And remember, use your finger sticks to calibrate your GCM during the day.
